■ Dialogue

Mike had a big fight with his girlfriend Susie last night. He called her this morning to make peace, but she didn’t answer the phone. So he is worrying about her.

Joe: Hey, Mike, what’s up? You look bothered.
Mike: Well, I think Susie is really mad at me.
Joe: Why? Did you guys fight?
Mike: Yeah, we did. I quarreled with her over a small matter last night and now I feel bad. I said some mean things to her and made her cry.
Joe: Well then, why don’t you call her and say sorry?
Mike: I called her more than 10 times this morning. But she is out of reach.
Joe: Hmm... maybe she is still mad at you and avoiding your calls.
Mike: I think so, too. But how can I make peace with her when I can’t reach her?
Joe: Why don’t you visit her then?
Mike: Yeah, I should go to her house. I can’t do anything because I’m so worried about her.
Joe: Well then, you’d better hurry up. She’ll be leaving for school soon.
Mike: Ok then, I’ll see you later!

■Translation

마이크는 어젯밤 여자친구 수지와 크게 다퉜다. 그는 오늘 아침에 화해하려고 그녀에게 전화를 걸었지만 그녀는 전화를 받지 않는다. 그래서 그는 수지를 걱정하고 있다.

Joe: 어이, 마이크, 무슨 일이야? 언짢아 보이는데.
Mike: 음, 수지가 나에게 정말 화가 난 것 같아.
Joe: 왜? 너희들 싸웠니?
Mike: 그래, 싸웠어. 어젯밤에 별일 아닌 걸로 수지와 말다툼을 했는데 지금은 마음이 안 좋아. 내가 좀 못된 말을 해서 수지를 울렸거든.
Joe: 흠, 그럼 전화해서 사과하지 그래?
Mike: 오늘 아침에 10번도 넘게 전화했어. 그런데 연락이 안돼.
Joe: 흠... 아마 아직도 너한테 화가 나서 네 전화를 피하는 건지도 몰라.
Mike: 그런 것 같아. 하지만 연락이 안 되는데 어떻게 화해를 해?
Joe: 그럼 집에 가보지 그래?
Mike: 그래, 수지네 집으로 가봐야겠어. 걱정돼서 아무것도 할 수가 없어.
Joe: 그럼, 서두르는 게 좋을걸. 곧 학교 가려고 나갈 거야.
Mike: 그래, 그럼 나중에 보자!

■ The Meaning of the Expression

"Someone is out of reach"는 ~에게 닿을 수 없다, 즉 "연락이 되지 않다" 라는 의미입니다.
